What is open-source?
When you create a program you are writing source code. This code is the base of your program, the commands, functions and so on. To distribute the program you must compile it, and then ship it. But in closed source (commercial) projects you do not distribute the source, because there is a risk of losing your intellectual property. Open source projects however see sharing source code as a way to constantly improve the quality of the end product through free distribution.

Another way to explain open source is to compare it to medicine. To create medicine, the pharmacies build a recipe and then create the medicine. Here, the medicine is the product, and the recipe is the source. If the recipe for a medication for AIDS/HIV was freely accessible, then the production of this medicine would be much cheaper and other experts could alter the recipe to improve it.

Open source works similarly. We give away the source and ask others to contribute. They can help by improving the recipe, in turn improving the product. The recipe is not owned by an individual or a company. The community owns the recipe. This means that everybody has access to the source and can give their suggestions and even add their own improvements.
